Your game should draw the player in right from the start. That s why it s nice to start off with a short but catchy animation. Additionally even before the opening animation it s common to put up a simple company logo on the screen as soon as the game is launched and before doing anything else. This initial screen serves the dual purpose of promoting your company s brand and masking the time it takes to load the custom resources. If your target platform is very slow at loading resources from the JAR, you can sometimes speed things up by hard-coding the image data byte array into a Java class. Listing 10-4 gives examples of how to turn Images into byte arrays and vice versa. The trade-off is that it s an extremely inefficient way of storing the data and hence should only be used for very small images. MIDP 2 devices aren t usually lowend enough in terms of screen-size and resource-loading speed for hard-coding the opening image to be useful. In the Dungeon example, the first step is to color the screen white and paint a small logo over it (Figure 10-3).

This opening animation consists of the title of the game and a drawing of some keys appearing over a background image, as seen in Figure 10-4.
